Chloe King is looking forward to celebrating her birthday with her friends and single mother, just like every other year... that is until she starts developing heightened abilities and discovers she's being pursued by a mysterious figure. Chloe meets Valentina, the leader of the San Francisco Mai, who suggests she go into hiding to remain safe. Valentina also assigns Jasmine to keep a watch on Chloe, while Chloe asks Alek to guard her mom after the Rogue call her mother's cell phone.
A teenager acquires special powers on her 16th birthday and learns she's a descendant of an ancient race of protectors who are pursued by human assassins.
Just as it seems Chloe is getting used to her new found responsibilities as The Uniter, she is forced to meet Valentina, the leader of the San Francisco Mai. To Chloe's dismay, Valentina informs her that, although the teenager has nine lives, each death becomes more painful than the one before. Chloe also learns that, if The Order's assassin cannot be stopped, she will be forced to leave her family and friends.
